PSA! Please Wash Your Brushes

Updated 4/14/20
The coronavirus pandemic is affecting people across the globe. To help prevent spreading the virus further, washing your hands and cleaning your tools has become a major priority.

But while many people wipe down their phones and furniture, you might want to consider devoting the same attention to cleaning your beauty products. Here's why:

Covid-19 can live on surfaces including your beauty products for days
According to a report from the National Institute of Health (NIH), the virus can live for up to four hours on copper, up to a day on cardboard, and up to three days on plastic and stainless steel. These lengths are also affected by temperature and humidity. Because some makeup tools, palettes, compacts, and even brush handles can be made from those materials, it's safe to assume they could become infected if used by an ill individual.

We at MarloHaus will be taking every precaution possible and going above and beyond to be safe for ourselves and our clients.

At this stage, its less clear if the virus can live on actual makeup itself. One recommendation we found is to throw away any makeup that has come into contact with virus as a precaution.  At a minimum, its recommended to spray all pressed powder products with rubbing alcohol, and discard any personal liquid products such as gloss and mascaras.

* Toni Tip: For hard to clean brushes that have cream or gel in them use dish soap and then follow with sanitizing anti-bacterial soap. Dish Soap can dry out natural hair brushes so best to use on synthetic and only when needed. Many foundation brushes are made with synthetic fibers.

Our recommended steps:
1) Lay a clean towel next to the sink

2) Get your brushes wet first and then dip each brush into cleaning solution. Swirl the brush under clean running warm water until brush is clean. We recommend using a makeup remover solution first followed by an ancleaning solution

* Toni Tip: Be mindful of the shape of your brush. cleaning against the natural shape or smashing your brush can misshapen it over time

3) Squeeze all the water out of the brush shaping it in it natural shape laying flat on the towel to dry overnight.

* Toni Tip: Don't place wet brushes in a cup upright and don’t soak upside down in a cup. The water will get into the base of the hair loosening the glue overtime.

Remember, your brushes will only remain clean if you have clean hands too, so keep up on the handwashing, especially before sitting down to start makeup.

Congratulations! You now have clean brushes!

Dull Winter Skin? Lets get glowing again!

First lets talk about your skin!

It can be complicated figuring out what skin type you have plus it can change depending on seasons of the year, life stages and hormones. Everyone needs moisture of some kind. Even if you have oily skin and especially if your skin is combination or dry.

Basic ingredients you need for hydration include ceramides (plumps skin and helps retain moisture), hyaluronic acid/sodium hyaluronate (attracts water to your skin, replenishes moisture and gives you a youthful glow) and glycerin (humectant that prevents moisture loss). PLEASE STOP USING COCONUT OIL (or any other oil) ALONE AND THINKING ITS ALL YOU NEED. You are missing some serious hydration. Your skin will thank you.

Think you just need a good face scrub? Not exactly. You have to hydrate your skin to help the dead skin cells release. If you skin is not well moisturized when you use a face scrub then you're only irritating your skin. Great ingredients for exfoliating include alpha hydroxy, lactic acid and fruit acids. These give your skin a beautiful glow and are more beneficial than using a scratchy paste that can be irritating and cause tiny cuts in your skin.

Lastly, a lot of people have acne and it can occur at any age and within any skin type. We'll only focus on that a little with the products as acne can be caused by so many different things. Generally a great night cream with retinol is very helpful for someone dealing with acne. You definitely have to be careful not to over-dry the skin as many acne products do. We'll expand this topic in a future post but you are always welcome to contact us with any questions!

We were so lucky to have such a wonderful bride and bridal party this last weekend! Now don't get us wrong we love doing weddings at Gaillardia BUT the bridal/locker room has terrible lighting. I mean terrible! Luckily Toni recently purchased two makeup lights so we could see in full brilliance just what we were doing. By the way for any pro artists reading The Makeup Light (TML Brand) is incredible.

Never before have we had such perfect lighting to create the perfect look for all of our beautiful bridal party members! Our clients can now rest easy knowing that wherever we go they will be made into their most beautiful selves while basking in the glow of perfect lighting!!  Ok, slightly dramatic but completely warranted. Please take a minute to check out our work from Patricia's special day and thank you for following our blog!

We also planned out our day with multiple artists to give each person a fully customized look without being rushed.

We couldn’t have said it better that stylist KRISSI FARRIMOND who had these words about the anniversary shoot: “From the obvious love and playfulness of our real couple, to the stunning hanging floral, to the five-tier cake with sugar flowers as big as your face, to the light pouring in from the expansive open window, and that gown! Everything felt as if spring was sprinkling each detail with pixie dust.” Yep! That pretty much sums it up and we know your going to love the way GREY COLLECTIVE photographer Sheradee Hurst captured all the details on film! - Published on Grey Likes Weddings Blog (click for additional images of all the details!)

Toni's Top 10 Makeup Brushes!

5/23/2016

The age old debate. Do you buy some cheap brushes that work OK or invest in ones that last and make applying makeup easier and even FASTER. I have to say there are brushes in my kit that are at least 10 years old and they still apply makeup beautifully!

Brushes are an investment that you want to make if you're trying to create a polished look and even cut down your makeup application time. Below I have listed some of my favorites! I'll try to explain how I use each but please message me if you have any questions or would like to set up a personal lesson.

Don't forget to take care of your brushes!

One of my favorite brush cleaners is Dr. Bronner's Fair Trade & Organic Castile Liquid Soap. It comes in different scents or no scent at all. A lot of pros use it and is a well known dupe for the Beauty Blender cleanser.

Make sure to clean your personal foundation brushes at least once a week and brushes used with powders may be cleaned less often. I typically clean my eyeliner and brow brush each time because it makes applying makeup so much easier. If you are applying makeup on someone else you MUST clean your brushes. I recently scouted an artist and was shocked by the buildup that was PACKED into their brushes. It's a scary world out there people! Oh and lay your brushes flat to dry after washing. If you dry them with the bristles pointed up the water runs back into the brush and can deteriorate the adhesive. Just a little pro tip there for ya ;)

We hope you have enjoyed our brush blog and please comment or message us if you have any questions or ideas for other blog topics!! We love hearing from you!

Know What to Say to Get the Look YOU Want on Your Wedding Day

4/15/2016

Choosing any vendor or detail for your wedding day can be daunting. Lilac blush or rose blush, indoor or outdoor, small or big, roses or hydrangeas, whether or not to invite the cousins you met only once or people from work and so on... There are a lot of decisions to make. Some of the very most important decisions are your hair stylist, makeup artist, wedding dress and photographer. Yes all the other decisions will be photographed and seen by you and all your guests but the memories of your perfect hairstyle and breath taking beauty will be forever kept and displayed as photos.

These are the images of you and your partners new life together and are forever a symbol of your perfect wedding day. No pressure right?! Below are some tips that can hopefully make at least a couple items easier to confidently check off your list.

How do I find a makeup or hair artist?
Referrals can't be beat! Ask who your friend used for her wedding if you loved her makeup or hair. Ask your photographer or other vendors who they have worked with or who they recommend. Even ask a photographer you maybe couldn't fit into the budget who does stunning editorial shoots what artists they work with. Or if you look online and find an artist in your area who is already booked or out of your price range... Ask them if they can recommend anyone. It never hurts to ask and only helps guide you into the right direction.

Find reviews for the artists you are considering. I can not stress this enough. REVIEWS are key! Yes some artists may be greatly artistic but you want a PROFESSIONAL Artist. Someone who is consistent, reliable, 100% invested in their craft and knows their worth BUT most importantly knows how to listen to what you want and create the perfect look showcasing your personal style and beauty on your wedding day.

What do I ask?
It's hard to know what questions to ask outside of an artists availability and pricing. You want the perfect look and you might not even have any idea what that is. Artists are visual. Paint them a picture of your wedding day, your personal style, grooms likes and dislikes, wedding colors, details etc. Show them an image of yourself (with and without makeup), your dress and a couple makeup ideas. Ask them to show you some images of what they would do based on your look. This helps you know that they are on the same page. If you feel confident with the artist and trust the references or reviews BOOK ASAP. Don't let this opportunity slip away and check that item off your list. Boom! And it's on to the next one.

But maybe you are not completely confident or have some concerns. This is when you MUST make an appointment for your consultation and bridal trial. Bring images and make sure to explain what you like about each image.

For example lets say you love all the images below and want your artist to create your look from them.

Picture
Picture
An artist could come up with ANY range of colors, styles, finishes and techniques for the images above. Communication here is key. I have seen MANY groupings of images like the one above and it is the artists job to dig deeper into WHY the client likes each image. I love seeing a range of images with different elements so don't steer away from choosing multiple ones to discuss with your artist. Just make sure to communicate what you like and what you don't like about each.

Hopefully we have helped ease the stress of selecting your hair and makeup artist and given you some tools to confidently check those items off your list. Remember a great artist can help guide you toward the look you want and steer you away from elements that might not suit your look or style. This is where an artist's thousands of hours of practice, application of color theory, technical training and product knowledge really make a bride shine! Unless you want to be matte and not shine and that's ok too :)

As always we love to hear any questions or comments you may have! Send us a personal message at marlohausmuahair@gmail.com , our MarloHausContact Form or feel free to comment here or on Facebook.
We're here for you so let us know if we can help in any way!
